I remember watching David Letterman on TV in the afternoon a gazillion years ago, dropping a Barbie doll on an LP spinning at warp speed on a record player and thinking, “this guy is gonna go far!” So now, he has gone too far.
I applaud him for standing up to extortionists, knowing the world would know about his affairs. That took a lot of courage. This courage is proof that he has what it took to resist having sex with his employees while living with another woman.
So how does someone who has everything one could want on this earth, feel the need to go down this road.
As human beings, if we use only our mind and body without including our spirit, we can be certain we’ll get tripped up. We do it all the time.
Don’t we all make the mistake of choosing things that our body craves but our mind knows it’s not good for us? Whether it be food, cigarettes, gambling, alcohol, medication, lack of exercise, sexual affairs, or whatever we know is wrong for us, we are always fighting our body’s inability to do the right thing on its own.
No matter what good fortune David Letterman has, he will never be satisfied or be able to resist the next beautiful woman who lights up his world after all this blows over if he doesn’t tap into the strength of his spirit. And that takes work. He’ll probably be working on that now.
It is our spirit that makes us strong enough to stand up to a boss even though having sex with him may move us forward. It is our spirit that gives us strength to get over a partner’s affair, control an addiction, rise up after experiencing abuse, get in shape, or suppress an urge to do something we know is wrong and will lead to consequences but we do it anyway.
I don’t know him personally but David Letterman seems like a good and caring man who has been bringing joy and laughter to millions of people’s lives for decades. Of course, like many, I felt bad for his wife and sighed when I saw one of the girls he slept with…geez..so young! But, if we judge him without looking at our mistakes and why we make them, than we are not getting the lesson ourselves.
I have no doubt that we need to become a more spiritual society. Each one of us needs to include spiritual people in our lives who can teach us how to move from our instant gratification mode to one of service and self control. Our children are counting on us to lead them to a joyful future and all these mistakes we are making by using just our minds and bodies without our souls are causing everyone a lot of unnecessary pain.
